Closing the Kino Outdoor stage for 2019 from 6pm on Bank Holiday Monday we are delighted to welcome back Musical ‘Mixologists’ Steve Spallington & The Violet Jive!
They’ll offer up a voluptuous Tiki style cocktail of sounds, blending styles and eras into one colourfully intoxicating hit ...Late night Swing/Jazz, raucous Rock ‘n’ Roll, other worldly Latin Exotica, earthy Funk/Soul & Alternative/Blues. Catchy songs, hot rhythms, dark riffs and lyrical imagery but with the musical skills and licks of even the hippest of hip cats!
Hot originals and a super cool array of carefully selected covers also at their fingertips mean the band have a wildly versatile set up and busy gigging schedule ...bars, venues, festivals, events and parties across the UK, including a support slot for Grammy winning, multi-platinum Jazz/Soul voice Gregory Porter in 2015.
“These musicians have mastered the art of the irresistible toe-tap and their songs transport you somewhere hot and wanton within the first few bars. With the smooth vocal of front man Steve Spallington, The Violet Jive are achingly cool and their music should appeal to just about anybody with functioning ears and a pulse. Wherever they’re going, they’re doing it in style.” SO Tunbridge Wells Magazine.
The festival gratefully acknowledges the very kind support of private individuals, patrons and companies which have supported these free events in 2019 including the Arts Council England, Big Lottery Fund, Chalk Cliff Trust, Rother District Council, UBI International, Pets Pyjamas, Benenden Hospital Trust, Harvey’s Of Lewis, Beside The Sea Holiday Cottages, Space Co Working, The Gallivant, Country Property Group, Rush Witt & Wilson Estate Agents, Heringtons Solicitors, PizzaExpress Live, Wilson Wilson & Hancock, Booker & Best Ltd, Eye Dream, Bramley & Teal Holiday Cottages, Reeds Rains Estate Agents, JD Architects, Stamco Building Supplies, Hastings International Piano Festival and MRA Associates.

Formed by musical ‘mixologist’, singer/guitarist Steve Spallington, The Violet Jive offer up a voluptuous tiki style cocktail of sounds with Paulo Beeching on the ‘cupboard of love’ (Double Bass) and beat master Matt Wilson on Drums. Lush vocals, ‘dirty spy-esque’ guitar prowess, rhythms from jungles and cities, mesmerizing riffs a-Go-Go! A sound both fresh and retro.
With both an originals set and juicy array of carefully selected covers at their disposal, the band offer a versatile set up with additional musicians including Sax and Latin Percussionist for extra voodoo vibes. Although Live shows are where it’s at for full intoxication, The Violet Jive also have two albums ‘Far Flung’ (2008) and ‘Rhythm Mythology’ (2012) available on their label Pitch-Ray Records, with two hot new download singles ‘Venus as a Boy’ (originally by Bjork) & electro swing flavoured ‘Paper Flowers’ released for 2014.
This year the festival is pleased to continue alfresco jazz at the wonderful Kino cinema Terrace in the heart of Rye.
