Rye Jazz Festival are incredibly pleased to present The Christians on Sunday 6th May. We welcome this iconic band to perform in Rye for the very first time performing a very unique stripped back concert at St Mary’s church.

Renowned for an endless string of soulful yet socially aware hits; Forgotten Town, Ideal World, Born Again, Harvest for the World,
What’s in a Word, Hooverville, Words, Father, The Bottle and many more.

The Christians enjoyed huge acclaim in the late 80s and early 90s both in the UK and Europe…..over 30 years later and they’re still going strong! The band are enjoying a revival currently touring in the UK and Europe with 2017 being their busiest yet with over 80 tour dates.

Listen to The Christians

In 2017 The Christians celebrated their 30th anniversary with a national sell out tour and are still going strong.

Renowned for an endless string of soulful yet socially aware hits; Forgotten Town, Ideal World, Born Again, Harvest for the World, What’s in a Word, Hooverville, Words, Father, The Bottle and many more.

The Christians enjoyed huge acclaim in the late 80s and early 90s both in the UK and Europe…..over 30 years later and they’re still going strong!

They often confused people with their band name (in fact, it was just the brothers’ surname with absolutely no religious connotation!)

Another Liverpool success story emerging in the late 80s, they were described as a latter-day ‘Temptations in Ripped Jeans’. Their first album, ‘The Christians’, exploded onto the scene spawning the aforementioned hit singles.

Their 2nd album, ‘Colour’, knocked Phil Collins off the number one spot! Often forgotten until you hear the songs and remember how much you loved them!

Still headed by enigmatic lead singer Garry Christian (very deserving of the Daily Mirror’s description of him as having ‘one of the finest voices in pop’) Garry has only gained in vocal stature (and wit) over the years!

The band are enjoying a revival currently touring successfully in the UK and Europe with 2017 being their busiest yet with over 80 tour dates.

Venue: St Mary’s Church

St Mary’s Church

Situated in the heart of old Rye, and providing marvelous views over the surrounding area and coast from its tower, St Mary’s has stood for the best part of 1000 years and is home to the oldest still-functioning pendulum clock in the country . It has some fine stained glass, including a window designed by the pre-Raphaelite Burne-Jones in the north aisle. St Mary’s provides a wonderful setting for our live events throughout the festival and has hosted artists including Antonio Forcione, Sarah Jane Morris, Ian Shaw and Ola Onabule.
