Spoken word is one of the UK’s fastest-growing art forms and as it gathers steam at festivals across the country we are excited to bring it to the Rye Jazz & Blues festival for the first time in 2019.
The Georgian Butter Market plays host to the afternoon of word play with award winning freestyle rapper Gramski and 2019 National Slam champion Birdspeed. So grab yourself a drink and descend on The Butter Market for an afternoon of free flowing rhymes!

Gramski has been freestyle rapping to audiences for over a decade and has done every famous UK festival you can name as well as performances in Panama, Vietnam, Switzerland and a rap battle with MEPs in Strasbourg of all things. Give him any word, concept or make up your own character and he’ll whip it up into a fast paced and engaging freestyle rap. Not to be missed, this boy is a lyrical machine like no other.
Birdspeed is a British born Barbadian raised poet, spoken word artist, writer and dancer. Her artistry weaves social commentary with her West Indian cultural heritage, which has resulted into a dynamic performance style.
“Birdspeed” (Bajan slang, meaning to “move real fast”) characterizes her signature rapid body articulations in dance and imagination/ creativity in her fields.
The Butter Market forms part of the Town Hall, which is a stone’s throw away from the historic and beautiful St Mary’s Church on Church Square. This area lends itself perfectly to live music performances and these music sessions create an intimate atmosphere and attract many visitors to the retail shops that are situated on Market and Lion Street.
We have kindly been given permission by the Rye Town Council for the use of this venue.
