The Rye international jazz and blues festival proudly present the ‘Godfather’ of Brazilian music and bossa nova the legendary Sergio Mendes on Friday 3rd May as one of our spring series of concerts.

He has defined Brazilian music for audiences around the world and will be performing with his full band in an exclusive intimate show in the unique and truly stunning setting of 900 year old St Mary’s church, Rye.

With a sound that combines Brazilian rhythms with jazz, pop, soul and funk, his music is instantly recognisable, including his 1966 hit Mas Que Nada, which topped the charts again forty years later in collaboration with the Black Eyed Peas.

He has countless career highlights, including performing twice in the White House for Presidents Nixon and Reagan, touring with Frank Sinatra, producing records for Gilberto Gil and Sarah Vaughn, and being inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

He has defined Brazilian music for audiences around the world and now makes a rare return to the UK for just a handful of shows. Be transported to Brazil at a performance by legend of the 1960s bossa nova revolution Sergio Mendes, who came to stardom with his iconic band Brasil ‘66. The band’s debut, which included the timeless single ‘Mas Que Nada’, cracked the Billboard top 10. Since then, Mendes has recorded over 35 albums, continuously exploring the very best of music. He has collaborated with artists across genres, including Stevie Wonder, Dave Grusin, will.i.am, Erykah Badu and John Legend.

Producer, composer, pianist and vocalist Mendes’ signature mix of bossa nova, samba and pop instrumentation has come to define Brazilian music on an international scale. With a career spanning five decades, Mendes’ influence on the music industry continues to evolve. Mendes brings the poise and class expected from an experienced maestro of the stage, with a show that delivers familiar favourites as well as surprises and newer work.
