Three days of free fantastic live music performances take within the heart of Rye from 12.00 Midday to 8pm on Saturday 24th to Monday 26th August, where you can expect to hear the very best in Jazz, Blues, Roots, Fusion, Soul, Funk, Rock Blues, Latin, Hip - Hop, Rap and New Orleans Jazz with an array of amazingly talented musicians from the South East and further a field. Drinks and food can be purchased at the outdoor stage and we close the roads to allow you, your friends and younger family members to wonder freely so you can enjoy the vibrant atmosphere safely. Blending Jazz Blues and World Music with Maiuko Quintet – Kino Outdoor Stage - Sunday noon
Blending her African and Portuguese roots, Maiuko sings in a unique style, blending jazz, blues, African-inspired rhythms and Portuguese melodies. Through her career, she has won numerous awards and has appeared in concerts worldwide including the Montreux Jazz Festival, WOMAD Festival, The London Jazz South Bank African Month, SOAS Fest, WOW, and LIFEM Fest. We are delighted to have her perform at the festival in 2019.
New Wave British Jazz Swaggering Tuba with Theon Cross – Kino Outdoor Stage - Sunday 2pm
We are excited to bring award winning London based Tuba Player and composer Theon Cross to the Rye Jazz & Blues Festival on Sunday afternoon from 2pm. Theon is one of the key components of London’s thriving young jazz scene. He has made a name for himself for providing his own unique brand of swaggering Tuba Bass in jazz and various other styles of music as well as being a band member with Sons of Kemet.
New Jazz Funk with Mad Yella ft Aisling Iris – Kino Outdoor Stage - Sunday 4pm
Expect jazz-funk, neo soul and rare groove as Mad Yella take to the Kino Outdoor stage on Sunday 25th August from 4pm with special guest vocalist Aisling Iris. This Kent based band are a joy to work with, listen to and watch. Their honesty and sublime sound led by slick and effortless frontman Kojo is something to behold and cheer on as their careers continue to develop.
Racing Freestyle Lyrics Hip Hop Beats Rap and Jazz Riffs with Soweto Kinch – Kino Outdoor Stage - Sunday 6pm
Closing the Kino Outdoor stage from 6pm on Sunday night is award winning alto-saxophonist and MC Soweto Kinch. Mixing scalding hot, hard bop grooves with racing freestyle lyrics, hip-hop beats, rap and jazz riffs, the saxophonist has amassed an unprecedented array of accolades including two MOBO awards, two Urban Music Awards and a Mercury Prize nominee.
DAT Brass Acoustic SoundSystem - Starting at the Butter Market and around the streets of Rye - Sunday from 2pm
Hold onto your hats, fasten your seat belts as we take off with Dat Brass Acoustic Soundsystem on the streets of Rye! Hailing from the streets of London, and raised by its punk-jazz underbelly, dB are a high octane, eleven-piece hip hop outfit who blend anthemic horn lines, lyrical verse, pounding percussion and razor sharp scratch and they’ll be at their acoustic best as Dat Brass Soundsystem for the festival from 2pm.
Improvisation Workshop with Soweto Kinch - Rye Community Centre - Sunday 1:45pm for 2pm start
The festival is delighted to present three Educational Workshops at the Rye Community Centre during the August Bank Holiday weekend. The second of the series is on Improvisation and being run by award winning saxophonist, spoken word artist and composer Soweto Kinch! Soweto will be running the workshop before his concert on the Kino stage later that day.
‘Play Me, I’m Yours’ Street Pianos - Around the town all day
Look out for our brightly decorated ‘Street Pianos’ at five locations in the town during all three days of the festival. Join us in the celebration of both piano and visual art and feel free to pull up a stool, bring your sheet music and play away to your hearts content entertaining the crowds and passers-by in the morning, afternoon or evening! Let’s make great music and have some fun!
