Free Music Programme Monday 26th August

Three days of free fantastic live music performances take within the heart of Rye from 12.00 Midday to 8pm on Saturday 24th to Monday 26th August, where you can expect to hear the very best in Jazz, Blues, Roots, Fusion, Soul, Funk, Rock Blues, Latin, Hip - Hop, Rap and New Orleans Jazz with an array of amazingly talented musicians from the South East and further a field. Drinks and food can be purchased at the outdoor stage and we close the roads to allow you, your friends and younger family members to wonder freely so you can enjoy the vibrant atmosphere safely. Cool Mid Century New Orleans Jazz with Cosimo Matassa Project – Kino Outdoor Stage - Monday noon
Opening the free music programme from noon on bank holiday Monday are The Cosimo Matassa Project a collective of musicians in London, UK, working to conjure up the unique rhythm ‘n’ blues flavours that emerged from New Orleans in the late 1940s and early 1950s.

Experimental Jazz Groove with Beat Replacement – Kino Outdoor Stage - Monday 2pm
At 2pm on Bank Holiday Monday we welcome Beat Replacement a modern jazz fusion group led by the UK’s rising drummer talent, Jamie Murray. With a solid groove style yet an open minded approach to free experimentation, Jamie and his all star band bring a heavy amount of fire and intensity to each performance. Beat Replacement have quickly earned respect as one of the UK’s most exciting new bands with their forward-thinking approach & exhilarating live show.

Inclusive Spontaneous Jazz with Kansas Smitty’s House Band – Kino Outdoor Stage - Monday 4pm
From the moment they played their first note five years ago, the Kansas Smitty’s House Band has set out to reinvent how audiences experience jazz. This tight-knit outfit make jazz inclusive with an emphasis on camaraderie, spontaneity, and joy. The eight-piece group were brought together from diverse backgrounds by American woodwind player, Giacomo Smith. Grounded in a shared love for the whole jazz tradition, the group is perpetually inventing new music with the aim that no two shows ever be the same, premiering new music at each show.

Retro Swing and Latin Curves with the Violet Jive – Kino Outdoor Stage - Monday 6pm
Closing the Kino Outdoor stage for 2019 from 6pm on Bank Holiday Monday we are delighted to welcome back Musical ‘Mixologists’ Steve Spallington & The Violet Jive! They’ll offer up a voluptuous Tiki style cocktail of sounds, blending styles and eras into one colourfully intoxicating hit ...Late night Swing/Jazz, raucous Rock ‘n’ Roll, other worldly Latin Exotica, earthy Funk/Soul & Alternative/Blues. Catchy songs, hot rhythms, dark riffs and lyrical imagery but with the musical skills and licks of even the hippest of hip cats!

Harvey Brewery Dray Horses - Starting at the Butter Market and around town - Monday from 3pm
Bringing both spectacle and theatre to the streets of the festival this year, we are delighted to welcome back the wonderful Harvey’s dray Horse that our lovely friends and beer brand partners Harvey’s of Lewis have kindly arranged for us. You can see these gentle giants on Monday 26th August from around 3.00pm outside the Butter Market which is located directly below he Georgian Town Hall on Market Street within the heart of the Citadel and near to the festival’s free outdoor music stage.

Jazz Workshop with Kansas Smitty’s House Band - Rye Community Centre - 11:45am for midday start
​The festival is delighted to present three Educational Workshops at the Rye Community Centre during the August Bank Holiday weekend. The final in the series is being run with members of Kansas Smitty’s House Band.The workshop is intended both musicians and fans of Jazz and please come ready to actively participate.

‘Play Me, I’m Yours’ Street Pianos - Around the town all day
Look out for our brightly decorated ‘Street Pianos’ at five locations in the town during all three days of the festival. Join us in the celebration of both piano and visual art and feel free to pull up a stool, bring your sheet music and play away to your hearts content entertaining the crowds and passers-by in the morning, afternoon or evening! Let’s make great music and have some fun!
